Espacios naturales en Gran Canaria

Esta característica, junto con la complicada orografía y el macizo (conocido como Los Pechos) que se extiende desde el noroeste hacia el sur-oeste, son los principales artífices de la gran variedad de condiciones climáticas que existen en esta isla y, por tanto, la causa de la gran variedad de ecosistemas que se pueden encontrar.
Casi el 43% del territorio de Gran Canaria está protegido, lo que ascienden a aproximadamente a 66.571 hectáreas de áreas protegidas. Esto representa una proporción de aproximadamente 1.000 metros cuadrados de área protegida por cada uno de los habitantes de la isla.
En este contexto, los habitantes de las islas han desarrollado una oferta de turismo de naturaleza que se caracteriza por un profundo respeto por el medioambiente. Esto incluye desde casas rurales centenarias que han sido renovadas, así como una amplia gama de actividades de ocio que van desde los deportes de alto riesgo, como escalada en roca, senderismo a lo largo de los «caminos reales» o por la antigua red de caminos del país, que se ha reabierto para uso público y que forma parte del patrimonio cultural e histórico de la isla.
